Part 1: Planning and preparation phase
Installing laminate floors yourself requires basic to medium-level construction skills. If you prepare and plan carefully and completely before the job begins it will make your installation a much more enjoyable experience. Consider the following before you undertake an installation:
- Make sure that the subfloor is flat, dry, and smooth.
- Always use a decent underlayment under your laminate floor for soundproofing and a moisture barrier. A good underlayment will also cover up minor imperfections of your subfloor.
- Laminate flooring can easily be installed on any existing floor whether concrete, wood, vinyl tile, sheet vinyl, tile if grout has been floated, and others as long as the floor is flat and solid.
- Examine every floor plank for any defects.
- Laminate floor installation should take place at room temperature and in controlled humidity (with air conditioning) Make sure that laminate is in place in area to be installed 72 hours prior to installation so that it can acclimate to room conditions.
- If installing laminate flooring over radiant heating, make sure that you read both the laminate flooring and radiant heat system instructions carefully.
