How to measure for window coverings

There are many different types of options to consider when choosing something to cover your windows. Why do you want to cover those areas? For decoration? For privacy? To block heat or retain heat? These are all valid questions to consider when deciding what type of window covering you will choose. Different types of window coverings include blinds, shades, curtains, shutters, sheers, and others. These can be installed inside window casings or outside window casings on the interior and exterior of your home. Once you have decided what type of covering you will install then depending on where it is installed will determine how you measure for it.

If installing a window covering inside the casing of the window, make sure to measure the width of the window opening at top, middle and bottom. Use whatever is the smallest of these measurements as your width. Depending on what type of covering you may need to allow for the installation hardware within your measurements. For example, decrease the measurement of a window opening by 1/2″ to allow for installation of most blinds inside the window casing. For vertical blinds you will need to do the opposite. Measure length in three places and width in one. Also, deduct 1 to 2 1/2″ inches ( find out exact amount from vertical blind manufacturer ) for the height of the headrail of a vertical blind installed inside the casing.

When installing on the outside of a window or window casing make sure to allow enough room on either side for the mounting brackets. Also, you must allow some overlap at the bottom of the window covering.
