How to install a door
Installing a door is a project that can greatly change the layout or look of a room. There are two different types of doors: interior and exterior. These are both available in a slab (just the door itself) or pre-hung (already attached to a frame). Interior doors are used to go from on interior room to the next. Exterior doors are typically used on an exterior wall to go outside the dwelling or into a garage/porch. The standard height for doors is 80 inches though many manufacturers offer special sizes that can be ordered or made. The standard width for exterior doors is 30, 32, and 36 inches. The standard width for interior doors is 24, 28, 30, 32, and 36. Doors also come in a wide variety of styles and designs.
When installing a door you will need to measure the opening first and find out what type of door you will need to purchase. The first step is making the opening ready for the door. If you are installing a pre-hung door you will center the door in the opening both horizontally and vertically. Typically you will need to put shims on the hinged side until it is as close to being level as possible. You will do this by only nailing or screwing partially. Once it has been shimmed you then can nail or screw that side to the wall stud all the way making sure it is secure and level. You will then repeat this process on the other side.Make sure you leave adequate room for the doorknob to be cut out and the keep put in place.
The last step is installing the trim such as brick mold flush with the door jamb. This will allow for a finished look. Make sure and be careful with your cuts as the trim is what will actually show.
