Installing concrete backerboard on floors
Concrete backerboard is a recently new innovation. It has greatly expanded the areas in which tile can be properly installed. Typically it is available in a few different thicknesses that is determined by your install area. Make sure and allow for the total height difference including tile and mortar on all door jambs and other moldings. It is relatively easy to install. However, making sure you follow a few simple steps will save you time in the future.
First, backerboard needs to be installed on the floor with thinset mortar. Usually you can use an unmodified mortar if doing a large amount instead of using the same modified thinset you will use to install the tile. Also, if installing over a plywood subfloor make sure and orient boards perpendicular to how the plywood is run. This will reduce the areas where a seam in the backerboard will fall right over a seam in the plywood. Next, you must use backerboard screws or others that have the rust-proof coating about every 8 inches. Then, you will need to mortar the joints together. Some brands of backerboard are not made with a mesh surrounding board, and the fiberglass mesh tape will have to be added separately.
